BioWare's Challenges: Dragon Age's Uncertain Future and Mass Effect's Current State

Author : Dylan May 22,2025

BioWare, the renowned developer behind iconic RPG series like Dragon Age and Mass Effect, is currently navigating through turbulent waters. The future of Dragon Age seems particularly uncertain, and there are growing concerns about the next installment in the Mass Effect series. Let's explore these issues in detail.

The Long Road to Dragon Age 4

The development journey of Dragon Age 4, now known as Dragon Age: The Veilguard, has been fraught with challenges. Initially sparked by the success of Dragon Age: Inquisition, the project saw numerous shifts and delays. Mark Darrah, overseeing the series in 2016, had ambitious plans for the franchise, aiming for a release of Dragon Age 4 in 2019-2020, followed by two more installments in quick succession. However, the diversion of resources to Mass Effect: Andromeda and later Anthem significantly stalled progress on Dragon Age 4, leaving it largely conceptual until 2019.

EA's pivot towards service-based games in 2017 led to Dragon Age being reimagined as a live-service title, codenamed Joplin. The failure of Anthem prompted a return to a single-player focus, renamed Morrison. Announced as Dreadwolf in 2022, the title was later changed to The Veilguard to reflect narrative shifts. Despite critical acclaim, the game's launch on October 31, 2024, saw disappointing sales, with only 1.5 million copies sold, half of what was projected.

Key Departures at BioWare

Following The Veilguard's underwhelming performance, EA initiated a major restructuring at BioWare. This led to significant layoffs and reassignments, with several key figures leaving the studio. Veteran writers Patrick and Karin Weekes, who contributed to both Mass Effect and Dragon Age, departed after over two decades. Patrick, who was the lead writer for The Veilguard, crafted memorable characters like Tali’Zorah and Solas. Other notable departures included game director Corinne Bouche, who joined a new RPG project, and writers Cheryl Chi and Silvia Feketekuti. The workforce at BioWare was reduced from 200 to fewer than 100 employees, with some developers shifting to other EA projects while a smaller team continues work on the next Mass Effect.

Dragon Age 4 Tried to Mimic Mass Effect but Failed

In an attempt to recapture the magic of Mass Effect, Dragon Age 4 drew heavily from its predecessor, particularly Mass Effect 2's companion relationships and decision-driven narrative. However, despite incorporating elements like the Suicide Mission-style finale and lighthearted character banter inspired by Mass Effect 3's Citadel DLC, The Veilguard failed to deliver a compelling RPG experience. The game's world state customization was limited, and the narrative felt linear, lacking the depth and complexity fans expected from a Dragon Age title.

Is Dragon Age Dead?

The future of Dragon Age remains uncertain. EA's leadership has expressed that The Veilguard might have fared better as a live-service game, indicating a shift in focus towards more profitable and engaging formats. Financial reports from Q3 2024 did not mention Dragon Age or Mass Effect, suggesting a cautious approach to single-player RPGs. While former BioWare staff expressed interest in expanding the Dragon Age universe, their departure casts doubt on these plans. Yet, the fan community's dedication keeps the spirit of Dragon Age alive, as noted by former writer Cheryl Chi.

What About the Next Mass Effect?

Mass Effect 5, announced in 2020, is BioWare's current focus. Despite the studio's reduced size and recent departures, the project is led by Michael Gamble, with a team including designer Dusty Everman, art director Derek Watts, and cinematic director Parry Ley. Aiming for greater photorealism, Mass Effect 5 seeks to continue the original trilogy's storyline, possibly linking to Andromeda. However, with extended production cycles and recent restructuring, a release is not expected before 2027. The hope is that this installment will avoid the pitfalls that plagued The Veilguard's development and storytelling.
