Spyro Playable in Crash Bandicoot 5

Spyro Was Planned as Playable Character in Canceled Crash Bandicoot 5

New reports indicate Crash Bandicoot 5 was shelved as Activision pivots to live-service gaming. Details reveal why the sequel was canceled and how Activision is restructuring its development focus.

Crash Bandicoot 5 Scrapped Due to Live-Service Shift

Crash Bandicoot 4's Performance Didn't Justify a Sequel

Gaming historian Liam Robertson's investigation reveals Toys for Bob - the studio behind Crash Bandicoot's revival - had begun developing Crash Bandicoot 5 before Activision redirected resources toward live-service projects. The planned sequel would have continued the story from Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time as a single-player 3D platformer.

Crash and Spyro Team-Up Concept Art

The report includes concept details showing the game would have featured a villain academy setting with returning antagonists. Most surprisingly, concept art reveals Spyro was planned as a second playable character, with the dragon joining Crash to battle interdimensional threats.

"Crash and Spyro were intended to be the two playable characters" - Liam Robertson

Former Toys for Bob artist Nicholas Kole first hinted at the cancellation last month. Robertson's findings suggest Activision's decision stemmed from both its live-service strategy and perceived underperformance of Crash Bandicoot 4.

Multiple Single-Player Projects Rejected

Tony Hawk Pro Skater Remake Canceled

Activision reportedly rejected other single-player projects, including Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 remakes. Tony Hawk confirmed development had begun before Vicarious Visions was reassigned to Call of Duty and Diablo projects.

Tony Hawk Interview Quote

Hawk explained: "That was the plan...until Vicarious got absorbed. They looked for other developers but didn't trust anyone the way they did Vicarious. After reviewing pitches, they simply moved on."
