Death Stranding 2: On the Beach director Hideo Kojima reportedly restructured the game mid-development after playtest feedback proved "too positive," as he intentionally avoids creating "mainstream" work.
This detail was shared by composer Yoann "Woodkid" Lemoine, who collaborated closely with Kojima on the sequel's score. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lemoine discussed his creative process and the unique challenge of scoring a narrative that evolves in real-time based on player actions.
He also recounted Kojima's concern over an unexpected issue: testers enjoying Death Stranding 2 excessively. Kojima stated, "That means something is wrong. We have to change something."
"There was a pivotal discussion around the midpoint of development," Woodkid explained. "He came to me and said, 'We have a problem.'"
"He was very candid, saying, 'We've been testing the game, and the results are too good. Players like it too much. That indicates a flaw; we need to make changes.' Consequently, he revised parts of the script and key gameplay moments, feeling the work wasn't provocative or emotionally charged enough to be divisive."
Kojima's philosophy is clear: "If everyone likes your creation, it's mainstream. It's conventional. It's pre-digested for easy consumption."
"I don't want that," Kojima told Lemoine. "I want players to gradually appreciate elements they initially disliked, because that's where genuine affection is forged."
Woodkid described this as a valuable lesson, reinforcing his belief in creating art that challenges and moves people rather than simply aiming to please.
