Call of Duty Studio Loses Multiplayer Development Director

After 15 years at Sledgehammer Games, Call of Duty multiplayer creative director Greg Reisdorf has departed. His tenure, beginning with 2011's Modern Warfare 3, encompassed key roles in various Sledgehammer-developed titles. Reisdorf's contributions included leading multiplayer development for the 2023 Modern Warfare 3, overseeing live seasonal content and modes.

Established in 2009, Sledgehammer Games quickly made its mark with Modern Warfare 3. Collaborating with Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software, the studio has consistently contributed to the Call of Duty franchise, including the recent Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

Reisdorf's January 10th departure was confirmed via a Twitter thread detailing his career highlights. His journey began with contributions to Modern Warfare 3, notably the Scorched Earth mission and a memorable sequence in the Blood Brothers mission.

His influence extended to Advanced Warfare, where he shaped gameplay mechanics like boost jumps and tactical reloads, alongside unique weapon designs and multiplayer maps. While he acknowledges mixed feelings about the "Pick 13" system, his focus remained on rewarding player skill.

Reisdorf also reflected on WWII, highlighting the rapid course correction regarding the initially divisive class-locked weapons system. His work on Vanguard favored traditional three-lane maps, prioritizing engaging gameplay over strict military realism.

Finally, his Modern Warfare 3 contributions included reimagining classic Modern Warfare 2 maps (like Rust's inclusion of Shepherd's skull) and directing the development of over 20 live seasonal modes, including Season 1's Snowfight and Infectious Holiday. Reisdorf's future plans remain within the gaming industry.
