Star Wars Outlaws: Honoring the Samurai Roots

Star Wars Outlaws: A Galactic Adventure Inspired by Samurai and Open-World Classics

Star Wars Outlaws' creative director, Julian Gerighty, recently revealed key inspirations behind the game's development, drawing parallels to acclaimed titles like Ghost of Tsushima and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. This blend of influences promises a unique open-world experience within the Star Wars universe.

Ghost of Tsushima: A Masterclass in Immersion

Gerighty cited Ghost of Tsushima as a major influence, highlighting its immersive world design and cohesive gameplay. Unlike games relying on repetitive tasks, Ghost of Tsushima seamlessly integrates story, world, and characters, creating a unified and captivating experience. This focus on immersion heavily impacted Gerighty's vision for Star Wars Outlaws, aiming to replicate that feeling of being fully entrenched in the outlaw life of a galaxy far, far away. The comparison emphasizes the shared focus on creating a believable and engaging narrative where players truly inhabit the role.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Vast Exploration and RPG Elements

Assassin's Creed Odyssey's expansive world and RPG elements also played a significant role. Gerighty admired the game's freedom and the vastness of its explorable environment, inspiring a similar approach for Star Wars Outlaws. He even consulted directly with the Odyssey development team, leveraging their expertise in managing world scale and traversal distances. However, Gerighty clarified that while drawing inspiration from Odyssey's scale, Outlaws aims for a more focused narrative experience, offering a compelling adventure within a manageable timeframe, unlike Odyssey's sprawling length.

Embracing the Outlaw Fantasy

The core concept driving Star Wars Outlaws is the classic Star Wars scoundrel archetype, reminiscent of Han Solo. Gerighty emphasized the allure of being a rogue in a galaxy brimming with opportunity. This central theme guided the development, resulting in diverse activities such as cantina games (like Sabacc), speeder chases, starship piloting, and planetary exploration. The seamless integration of these activities aims to fully immerse players in the fantasy of living the life of an outlaw within the Star Wars universe. The game aims to capture the essence of this iconic character type, allowing players to truly embody the role.
