Randy Pitchford: Borderlands 4 Date Unaffected by Rivals

Author : Stella Nov 10,2025

Gearbox studio head Randy Pitchford has clarified that Borderlands 4's early release was not influenced by competing titles' schedules, despite rumors suggesting otherwise regarding games like Marathon or Grand Theft Auto 6.

The cooperative FPS Borderlands 4 was originally slated for September 23 but will now launch on September 12 across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

This 11-day advance fueled speculation that Take-Two (which owns both Gearbox and Rockstar) aimed to distance Borderlands 4 from GTA 6's anticipated fall 2025 launch window.

Additional theories suggested Sony-owned Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon - originally set for the same September 23 release date - might have prompted the shift. Borderlands 4 will be featured in PlayStation's April 30 State of Play showcase at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 11pm CEST.

Pitchford took to Twitter to firmly deny any external scheduling factors: "Borderlands 4 shipping early reflects our confidence in the game's progress and current development metrics. This decision has zero connection to other titles' actual or projected launch dates."

The gaming industry rarely sees major titles releasing ahead of schedule (delays being far more common). Chris Dring of The Game Business commented that without competitive considerations, the premature release seems unusual: "When dates are already public across marketing materials and search results, there's typically significant commercial justification for changing them."

In a recent video announcement, Pitchford enthusiastically revealed: "Development is exceeding expectations - the game feels incredible and the team is performing at their peak. We're thrilled to deliver Borderlands 4 earlier than planned on September 12!"

The corporate relationship warrants noting: Take-Two Interactive serves as parent company to both Borderlands publisher 2K Games and GTA developers Rockstar, with CEO Strauss Zelnick overseeing strategic planning across all subsidiaries.

In February, Zelnick told IGN about Take-Two's release strategy: "We carefully schedule launches to prevent franchise overlap and respect players' investment in each title. Quality releases tend to foster interest in subsequent premium experiences."

Meanwhile, speculation continues regarding potential delays for GTA 6 beyond its stated fall 2025 window. When pressed about Rockstar's projected timeline, Zelnick acknowledged: "While we're confident, in game development there's always inherent uncertainty about final ship dates."
