Sony addressed the nearly day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, citing an "operational issue" in a social media statement. However, the company offered no further explanation regarding the root cause or preventative measures.
To compensate affected users, PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a five-day extension to their subscriptions, automatically applied to their accounts.
The outage significantly impacted gameplay, with over one-third of players unable to log in and widespread reports of server crashes.
The necessity of a PSN account, even for single-player PC games, remains a point of contention for many players, and this outage has fueled existing concerns.
This isn't the first major PSN disruption. The April 2011 data breach resulted in over 20 days of connectivity problems. While less severe, the recent incident has left PS5 users frustrated by Sony's limited communication.
