Hideki Kamiya has expressed interest in developing a Devil May Cry remake, though he insists it would need complete reinvention. Discover how the legendary creator envisions modernizing his classic title and the personal story behind its origin.
Hideki Kamiya Wants To Develop Devil May Cry Remake
Modern Approach to Classic Remake
The gaming industry has seen a surge in high-profile remakes of iconic titles like Final Fantasy VII, Silent Hill 2, and Resident Evil 4. Now another legendary franchise might join this trend, as its original director Hideki Kamiya reveals his desire to revisit Devil May Cry.
During a May 8 YouTube Q&A session, Kamiya responded to fan inquiries about potential remakes. When questioned about a Devil May Cry remake, he confirmed: "If I were to remake it, I'd want to do it properly."
Originally Launched in 2001
First released in 2001, Devil May Cry began development as Resident Evil 4 before evolving into an entirely new franchise. The radical transformation from survival horror to stylish action game prompted Capcom to establish it as a separate IP.
Reflecting on the game's 24-year legacy, Kamiya shared the personal inspiration behind its creation. "Back in 2000, I experienced a devastating breakup," he recalled. "That emotional turmoil became the creative fuel for Devil May Cry."
The veteran developer admits he never revisits his completed games, though occasional gameplay footage reminds him how much game design has evolved. Should he remake DMC, he would completely rebuild it with contemporary technology and design philosophy rather than simply updating the original.
While currently not actively planning the project, Kamiya remains confident in his creative abilities: "If Capcom greenlights this, they should trust me with it. When the time comes - I'll deliver. That's my strength." Beyond Devil May Cry, Kamiya has also expressed interest in remaking Viewtiful Joe, giving fans hope for more revitalized classics from the acclaimed developer.
