Excitement is building around the Dungeons & Dragons show Critical Role, as its CEO Travis Willingham has hinted that the group's first major video game could be announced "any day." During a recent interview with Business Insider, the team shared their expansive plans for the future. While details about the game's title and its connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham assured fans that the development team is diligently working on the project.
Willingham elaborated on the game's concept, stating, "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria." This suggests a deeply interactive experience where players can influence the narrative within the rich world of Critical Role.
Willingham, who is not only the CEO but also an actor and a star on the show, co-founded Critical Role alongside other well-known voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. From its beginnings as a D&D show, Critical Role has evolved into a vast universe, highlighted by the success of its Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.
The upcoming video game will be a standalone addition to the Critical Role portfolio, potentially not directly connected to its existing projects. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned the team was in "active pursuit" of creating a Critical Role video game spinoff, indicating they were nearing the end of a multi-year development journey. It remains uncertain whether the game will adapt one of their campaigns or introduce an original story set in their world.
Originally, the team hoped to announce the game by the end of 2024 or early 2025. As we move into the third month of 2025, the announcement seems imminent. Willingham reflected on their cautious approach to the gaming industry, noting, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels... There’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
While a release date for the Critical Role video game has yet to be announced, fans can stay engaged by exploring the first details of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
