Hideki Kamiya, renowned game director behind classics like Okami, Devil May Cry, and Bayonetta, embarks on a new chapter. After a two-decade tenure at PlatinumGames, he's launched Clovers Inc., a new studio dedicated to fulfilling his long-held ambition: an Okami sequel.
A Long-Awaited Return
Kamiya's passion for Okami and its unfinished narrative fueled his desire for a sequel. His previous attempts to convince Capcom proved unsuccessful, leading to humorous anecdotes shared online. Now, with Clovers Inc. and Capcom's backing as publisher, his dream is finally taking shape.
Clovers Inc.: A New Beginning
The name "Clovers Inc." pays homage to Clover Studio, the developer behind the original Okami and Viewtiful Joe, and reflects Kamiya's deep respect for his early Capcom teams. A joint venture with former PlatinumGames colleague Kento Koyama, Clovers Inc. balances Kamiya's game development focus with Koyama's management expertise. The studio currently employs 25 people, with plans for gradual expansion. Kamiya emphasizes a shared creative vision over sheer size.
Many team members are former PlatinumGames employees who followed Kamiya and Koyama, drawn to their shared creative philosophy.
Departure from PlatinumGames
Kamiya's departure from PlatinumGames, a company he co-founded, surprised many. He attributes his decision to internal changes that conflicted with his game development philosophy. While remaining tight-lipped about specifics, he emphasizes the alignment of his vision with Koyama's, forming the foundation of Clovers Inc.
A Softer Side?
Kamiya's online persona is known for its bluntness. Recently, however, he's shown a more empathetic side, apologizing to a fan he previously insulted and engaging more positively with fans online. While his characteristic directness remains, a shift towards greater online sensitivity is evident.
