Nintendo Switch 2 Direct: Top 7 Surprises Revealed

Author : Henry Apr 20,2025

New video game hardware announcements often bring predictable improvements like enhanced graphics, reduced load times, and fresh iterations of iconic franchises, such as those featuring a certain plumber and his turtle adversaries. Nintendo has consistently delivered these advancements across its consoles, from the N64's analog controller to the Switch's innovative portability. The recently unveiled Switch 2 continues this tradition. Yet, true to its nature, Nintendo has managed to surprise fans with the Switch 2 Direct.

It's 2025, and Nintendo has finally embraced online play with the Switch 2. As a lifelong Nintendo enthusiast, I can't discuss this exciting development without a touch of affectionate frustration. My journey with Nintendo began at the age of four in 1983, dodging footballs like Mario evading Donkey Kong's barrels. Nintendo's history with online gaming has been less than stellar, with the exception of Satellaview and Metroid Prime: Hunters. The Switch required a separate app for voice chat, and finding friends was never straightforward. However, the Switch 2 Direct introduced GameChat, a promising four-player chat feature with noise suppression, video camera support, and screen sharing capabilities. Additionally, it offers text-to-voice and voice-to-text options, enhancing accessibility. While details on a unified matchmaking system remain undisclosed, this is a significant step forward, potentially signaling the end of the cumbersome friend code system.

Another unexpected announcement was Hidetaka Miyazaki's exclusive project for Nintendo, "The Duskbloods." Initially, I mistook the trailer for "Bloodborne 2" due to its unmistakable FROM Software aesthetics. This multiplayer PvPvE game promises to bring Miyazaki's signature challenging gameplay to the Nintendo platform, showcasing his relentless dedication to his craft.

In a surprising shift, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai is now leading a new Kirby game, moving away from the Smash series. Given Sakurai's passion for the pink protagonist, this new Kirby title is expected to be a refined and enjoyable experience, unlike the less successful Kirby's Air Ride on the GameCube.

The Switch 2's Pro Controller 2 introduces an audio jack and two mappable extra buttons, enhancing its functionality and customization options. These additions, though seemingly minor, significantly improve the gaming experience.

Perhaps the most shocking revelation was the absence of a new Mario game at launch. Instead, the team behind "Super Mario Odyssey" is developing "Donkey Kong Bananza," a 3D platformer with destructible environments. This move showcases Nintendo's willingness to defy expectations, relying on the appeal of Donkey Kong and other titles like "Mario Kart World" to drive sales of the Switch 2. "Mario Kart World," an open-world iteration of the beloved racing series, promises zany physics and chaotic multiplayer action.

Despite these exciting features, the Switch 2 comes with a steep price tag of $449.99 USD, making it the most expensive launch in Nintendo's history. This high cost, influenced by global economic factors, positions the Switch 2 as a premium offering without the price advantage that has historically differentiated Nintendo's consoles and handhelds.
