In a captivating interview at Gamescom, Ed Boon, the co-founder of Mortal Kombat, shed light on how NetherRealm Studios plans to differentiate the gameplay of Omni-Man and Homelander in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1. Addressing the concerns of fans who feared these characters might end up with similar combat styles, Boon emphasized the team's commitment to creating distinct experiences for each hero.
Boon explained that the developers have been given the creative freedom to explore various ideas for these characters. However, they are intentionally avoiding scenarios where Homelander and Omni-Man would share identical Superman-esque abilities. "Obviously, we could do anything with the characters, but I don’t think we’re going to have both Homelander and Omni-Man have heat vision or something like that," Boon stated, highlighting their approach to uniqueness.
Further detailing the differences, Boon mentioned that the main attacks of these characters will be significantly distinct, ensuring that players feel they are controlling two very different heroes. Additionally, the team has drawn inspiration from the heroes' actions in their respective shows to craft unique Fatalities for each character. "They’re definitely going to play differently. The main attacks are going to really differentiate them, but we’re definitely aware of the assumption that some people were making on, ‘Oh, they’re just going to be the same characters,'" Boon added, reassuring fans of the thoughtful design process behind these iconic figures.
