This app tests your knowledge of the Iroha Uta, a classic Japanese poem. It presents the first half of an Iroha Uta phrase and challenges you to choose the correct second half from three options.
The Iroha Uta is a 47-character poem using all the hiragana characters (excluding the character "wo"). This app focuses on phrases used in the Tokyo style of the game. Iroha Karuta, a card game based on the poem, uses these phrases. It originated in Kyoto during the mid-Edo period, and later spread to Osaka, Nagoya, and Edo (present-day Tokyo).
How to Play:
You'll be shown the first half of an Iroha Uta phrase. Select the correct second half from three choices. After each answer, you'll see if you were right or wrong, along with an explanation of the phrase.
