Sony Has Established a New AAA PlayStation Studio

Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio: A New AAA IP in the Making

A recently surfaced job posting confirms Sony's establishment of a new, unannounced AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks Sony's 20th first-party studio and fuels excitement for a high-profile, original AAA title destined for the PS5.

The news adds to the already considerable anticipation surrounding PlayStation's first-party studios, renowned for their critically acclaimed titles. Recent acquisitions like Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite have further strengthened PlayStation's development capabilities. This mystery studio represents another significant addition to their impressive lineup.

The Los Angeles-based studio is currently developing a "groundbreaking" original IP, as revealed in a job listing for a Project Senior Producer. Speculation regarding the studio's origins centers on two key possibilities:

Potential Scenario 1: A Bungie Spin-off

One theory suggests the studio incorporates a team spun off from Bungie following layoffs in July 2024. Approximately 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment, potentially forming the core of this new studio, possibly working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project.

Potential Scenario 2: The Jason Blundell Team

Another compelling possibility involves the team led by industry veteran Jason Blundell. Blundell, known for his work on Call of Duty: Black Ops, co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024. Significantly, many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation in May 2024 under Blundell's leadership. Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, this scenario seems increasingly likely. The new project might be a continuation or a reboot of Deviation Games' previous undertaking.

Regardless of its origins, the existence of this new studio assures fans of another exciting PlayStation first-party game in development. While an official announcement from Sony may be some time away, the anticipation is palpable.
