Sega Ventures into Uncertain Territory with 'Century' and 'Virtua Fighter' Projects

Sega Embraces Innovation

RGG Studio, renowned for the Like a Dragon series, is currently developing a new IP (Project Century), alongside a Virtua Fighter project and the next Like a Dragon installment. This ambitious undertaking is possible, according to studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama, because Sega embraces risk and fosters innovation.

The simultaneous unveiling of Project Century (a new IP set in 1915 Japan) and the Virtua Fighter project (distinct from the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. remaster) at The Game Awards 2025 and on Sega's official channel respectively, showcases Sega's confidence in RGG Studio's capabilities. Yokoyama credits Sega's acceptance of potential failure as a key factor in their success. He points to the creation of Shenmue as an example of Sega's willingness to experiment, born from the question: "What if we made 'VF' into an RPG?"

With the support of Virtua Fighter creator Yu Suzuki, and a team committed to innovation, Yokoyama and Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada promise a high-quality experience for both new and existing fans. Yamada emphasizes the goal of creating something "innovative that a wide range of people will find ‘cool and interesting!’”
