PS5 Pro's Poor Reception Does Nothing to Slow Sales ProjectionsThe $700 PS5 Pro, officially launched, is predicted by Ampere Analysis to achieve sales comparable to the PS4 Pro, even with its higher price tag. Ampere's Piers Harding-Rolls notes a significant price difference (40-50%) between the PS5 and PS5 Pro, exceeding the PS4 and PS4 Pro launch gap.

The firm estimates approximately 1.3 million PS5 Pro units sold during its November 2024 launch window—400,000 fewer than the PS4 Pro's initial sales. Harding-Rolls points to the PS4 Pro's $399 launch price (compared to a $299 slim PS4), highlighting a smaller price differential (33%). He suggests the PS5 Pro's price may dampen demand, but anticipates strong sales among dedicated PlayStation fans. Sony's PS4 Pro ultimately sold around 14.5 million units, representing about 12% of total PS4 sales, with projected sell-through of approximately 13 million units within five years.

In a statement to CNET, Cerny highlighted the improved GPU's capability to deliver higher resolutions for PSVR2 titles, though specific supported games remain unannounced.

Cerny also indicated that PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, the PS5 Pro's AI upscaling technology, will be compatible with PSVR2. The PS5 Pro also boasts compatibility with existing PS5 accessories, including the PS Portal remote player. This compatibility, coupled with reports of a potential new PlayStation handheld console earlier this year, fuels speculation that a PS5-powered handheld device could be in development. While unconfirmed, the PS5 Pro's advanced capabilities suggest a renewed focus on the handheld market.
