Warner Bros. is building a unified Harry Potter universe, connecting the highly anticipated Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the upcoming HBO TV series. Discover the details below.
Hogwarts Legacy Sequel to Share Narrative Elements with Harry Potter TV Series
J.K. Rowling's Limited Involvement in Franchise Management
Warner Bros. Interactive has confirmed a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is in development and will directly tie into HBO's Harry Potter series (debuting in 2026). The original game's phenomenal success—over 30 million copies sold—has fueled this expansion.
David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, told Variety that the project involves close collaboration with Warner Bros. Television to create a cohesive narrative. While the game is set in the 1800s, significantly before the series, it will share overarching themes and storytelling elements.
Details about the HBO series remain limited, but HBO & Max Content CEO Casey Bloys confirmed it will delve into the iconic books. The challenge lies in organically integrating the game and series, given their different time periods. However, fans anticipate new Hogwarts lore emerging from this collaboration.
Haddad highlights Hogwarts Legacy's impact on franchise interest: "The rest of the company was very curious about what we helped to unlock with ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ last year."
Importantly, J.K. Rowling will not be directly involved in managing the franchise, according to Variety. While Warner Bros. Discovery keeps her informed, the studio prioritizes collaborative decision-making on canon expansions.
Rowling's past controversial statements led to a boycott of Hogwarts Legacy in 2023. Despite this, the game's immense success underscores the continued demand for the franchise. Warner Bros. assures fans that Rowling's views will not influence the game or series.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Release Date: A 2027-2028 Prediction
With the HBO series aiming for a 2026 or 2027 release, a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is unlikely to arrive earlier. Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Widenfels previously called a sequel a top priority.
Given the scale of the original game, development will take considerable time. A 2027-2028 release window seems the most plausible prediction. For more detailed predictions, see our related article.
