Mobile gaming's remarkable impact on game design innovation is undeniable. Smartphones, with their unique buttonless design and vast user base, have propelled video games in unexpected directions. Roia, a prime example, showcases this evolution.
This innovative puzzle-adventure is the latest creation from Emoak, the acclaimed indie studio behind Paper Climb, Machinaero, and the award-winning Lyxo.
Surprisingly, Roia's core objective is simple: create a river. Starting from a mountain peak, you guide the water's flow to the sea by skillfully shaping the terrain with your finger.Emoak's press release reveals the game's deeply personal connection to designer Tobias Sturn. His childhood memories of playing in a creek near his grandparents' house, building waterwheels and bridges with his grandfather, heavily influenced the game's creation. Roia is dedicated to his grandfather, who passed away during its development.
Roia defies easy categorization. While challenges exist, the game's essence is about relaxation. The journey takes you through beautifully crafted environments – forests, meadows, and charming villages – guided by a helpful white bird.
The screenshots reveal Roia's elegant, minimalist aesthetic, reminiscent of Monument Valley. Adding to the experience is a captivating soundtrack by Johannes Johannson, also responsible for the music in Emoak's Lyxo.
Roia is available now on the Google Play Store and the App Store for $2.99.
