Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but we've got some great memories to cherish. This week brings a bounty of game reviews, exciting new releases, and some tempting sales. Let's dive in!
Reviews & Mini-Views
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)
The Switch continues to give us second chances at classic games! Following the successful releases of Trials of Mana and Live A Live, we now have the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, finally bringing Edgeworth's adventures to English-speaking audiences. This collection builds upon previous Ace Attorney storylines, with the second game enhancing the first. Playing as Miles Edgeworth offers a fresh perspective from the prosecution's viewpoint. While the core gameplay remains similar—investigating, questioning witnesses, solving cases—the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a captivating twist. The pacing can feel uneven at times, but overall, fans of the main series will find this sub-series highly enjoyable. If the first game feels slow, persevere—the sequel is significantly better.
Bonus features include an art and music gallery, a story mode for relaxed playthroughs, and the ability to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A helpful dialog history feature is also included. The two games offer a compelling contrast, making this a worthwhile package for any Ace Attorney enthusiast. With this release, almost every Ace Attorney game is now available on Switch!
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)
A sequel to the obscure NES classic Gimmick!? It's a surprising but welcome addition! Developed by Bitwave Games, this sequel stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels will test your skills, but an easier mode is now available for those seeking a less demanding experience. Yumetaro's star attack returns as a versatile tool for solving puzzles and battling enemies. New collectibles unlock customization options, adding replayability.
Expect a tough challenge, even on the easier setting. Frequent deaths are inevitable, but generous checkpoints prevent excessive frustration. The charming visuals and music help maintain a positive atmosphere, but don't underestimate this game's difficulty. Mastering the platforming and utilizing Yumetaro's abilities is key to success. Gimmick! 2 is a fantastic follow-up, successfully building upon the original while forging its own identity. Highly recommended for platforming fans who enjoy a challenge.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
A significant departure from its predecessor, Valfaris: Mecha Therion shifts from action-platforming to a shoot 'em up experience. While the change is risky, it surprisingly works well. Performance on the Switch might be slightly hampered by the console's hardware limitations, but the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and unsettling visuals remain engaging. The weapon system—a main gun, a melee weapon, and a rotating third weapon—creates a dynamic and rewarding gameplay loop. Mastering the rhythm of weapon switching and evasive maneuvers is crucial.
While different from the original Valfaris, Mecha Therion retains its unique atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids many common genre pitfalls. While other platforms might offer better performance, the Switch version delivers a satisfying experience.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)
A licensed game primarily aimed at fans of the Umamusume franchise. The game excels in its fan service, offering strong writing and meta-systems that reward dedicated players. However, non-fans might find limited appeal, with a small selection of repetitive mini-games and a storyline that heavily relies on existing knowledge of the source material. Even for fans, the emphasis on fan service overshadows the gameplay experience. The unlockable mini-game is a highlight, but the overall package feels lacking.
While the presentation is excellent, capturing the look and feel of Umamusume, the limited gameplay and short lifespan might disappoint. Fans might find enough to keep them engaged, but it's unlikely to appeal to a broader audience.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)
This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, featuring three charming 8-bit games previously unavailable in English. The package includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. Each game is fully localized and includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries. The localization effort alone is a significant accomplishment.
The games themselves offer a mixed bag. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island provides a solid adventure experience. The Wing of Madoola is the most ambitious but also the most uneven. While not top-tier NES games, they offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's diverse catalog. This collection is a must-have for Sunsoft fans and retro gaming enthusiasts.
