The 10 Best Game Boy Advance & Nintendo DS Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author : Skylar Jan 07,2025

A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch! Unlike some other consoles, the Switch has a surprisingly limited selection of dedicated Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports. Therefore, we're combining both systems into one list, mirroring their shared retail presence years ago. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts many excellent GBA titles, this list focuses on those available on the Switch eShop. We've chosen ten favorites – four GBA and six DS games – presented without any particular ranking. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with a solid shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the original Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a personal preference for superior gameplay, this GBA port is still a worthwhile experience. A fun comparison piece, it offers a more streamlined playthrough. Regardless of version, Steel Empire is a captivating title, enjoyable even for those who aren't typically drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, a worthy successor emerged on the GBA: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an outstanding side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry isn't perfectly polished. Subsequent games refine the formula, but the first game remains the ideal starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature! Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer vastly different experiences, both excelling in their respective genres. Battle Network is an RPG with a unique battle system blending action and strategy. Its concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, the original provides ample enjoyment.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For the right mood, it even surpasses the phenomenal Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages grinding, yet the gameplay remains engaging. The unique setting and hidden secrets solidify its status as a top-tier third-party GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, catapulted the Half-Genie Hero to wider acclaim, leading to continued success across generations. Its origins are somewhat ambiguous, stemming from an unreleased GBA title (which is also getting a release soon!).

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Technically a GBA game (its original platform), Ace Attorney could be considered for that list as well. Known for blending investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes and quirky humor, the first game is a standout. While later entries hold appeal, this initial installment is undeniably excellent.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick features equally compelling writing and innovative gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save others while unraveling the mystery of your death. A captivating and unique experience.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, ideally experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version serves as a suitable alternative if you lack access to a DS. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are worthy, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the improved button controls over the original touch controls. Play all three for a complete experience!

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

This franchise thrives on the DS/3DS systems, but Atlus's Switch port is surprisingly playable. Each Etrian Odyssey title is a substantial RPG, and Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a worthwhile adventure.
