Monster Hunter Wilds: A New Weapon Type?

The Elusive 15th Weapon

Monster Hunter Wilds Doesn't Have New Weapons Because They're Hard to Come Up WithAfter more than a decade with the same weapon roster, the possibility of a new weapon type in the Monster Hunter (MH) series is intriguing. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed this possibility.

Monster Hunter Wilds offers 14 weapon types, unchanged since Monster Hunter 4 and the introduction of the Insect Glaive. While Tokuda expressed interest in adding a new weapon, he also highlighted the considerable difficulty in creating a weapon that doesn't overlap significantly with existing ones. He emphasized the extensive resources and time required for balancing and refining existing weapons, stating that these resources have been prioritized over adding a new weapon type.

Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds

Monster Hunter Wilds Doesn't Have New Weapons Because They're Hard to Come Up WithCapcom's dedication to innovation is evident in MH Wilds, with additions like Focus Mode and Power Clash enhancing existing weapons. While the team considered community feedback from the beta, Tokuda stressed the importance of maintaining the core feel of each weapon.

Weapon balancing across titles is a key consideration. Tokuda explained that each title aims to establish a specific "feel" for each weapon, a concept refined through player testing. He acknowledged the challenges of balancing weapons in Wilds, particularly given the additions made in Iceborne, which raised the skill ceiling for experienced players. MH Wilds, however, represents a fresh start, with a focus on ensuring each weapon aligns with the game's overall design philosophy.
