New Vegas Director Eager to Helm Next Fallout Series Entry

Author : Lucas Apr 08,2025

The director of *Fallout: New Vegas*, Josh Sawyer, along with several other developers from the *Fallout* series, have voiced their interest in returning to work on a new installment. However, their enthusiasm comes with a significant condition: they want the freedom to innovate and explore new creative avenues within the franchise.

In a recent episode of his YouTube Q&A series, Sawyer expressed his willingness to develop another *Fallout* game, but emphasized that his participation would hinge on the creative boundaries set for the project. "Any project has to do with 'what are we doing, what are the boundaries, what am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?'" he stated. He further elaborated that overly restrictive constraints would make the project unappealing, as it would limit his ability to explore new ideas.

Echoing Sawyer's sentiments, *Fallout* co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky also expressed their interest in returning to the series. In an interview with The Gamer last year, Cain mentioned that he would be keen to work on a remaster of *Fallout: New Vegas*, but his return would depend on the level of creative freedom he would be granted. "Every RPG I've ever made offered me something new and different that got me interested in making it," Cain explained. He stressed that his interest in a new *Fallout* game would be driven by what new elements it could bring to the table, questioning, "If someone came to me and said, 'You want to make a Fallout game?' My answer is 'Well, what's new?' I didn't even want to make *Fallout 2*, why would I want to make a new *Fallout*? What's different about it?"

Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart has also shown interest in working on another *Fallout* game, though he confirmed in an interview with Game Pressure last January that no such project was currently in development. "We’re not working on *Fallout*, and we haven’t even talked about what it would be," he stated. Urquhart highlighted that Obsidian's current focus is on other projects like *Avowed*, *Grounded*, and *Outer Worlds 2*. He expressed hope for a future *Fallout* project before his retirement, saying, "I would love to make another *Fallout* before I retire. I don’t know when that is, I don’t have a date of my retirement. It’s funny, you can say I’m already 52, or only 52. It’s one of those two, depending on the day. My hope is that’ll happen, but we’ll have to wait and see."
