Sydney Sweeney Stars in Split Fiction Film Adaptation

Author : Harper May 01,2025

Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in "Madame Web," is set to star in the upcoming movie adaptation of the popular video game "Split Fiction." The film, which is being developed by Story Kitchen—the company behind the successful Sonic films—is gaining momentum with "Wicked" director Jon M. Chu at the helm. The screenplay is being crafted by the acclaimed duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, known for their work on "Deadpool & Wolverine." Story Kitchen is currently shopping this impressive talent package to Hollywood studios, anticipating a competitive bidding war.

A key question surrounding the project is which of the game's central characters, Zoe or Mio, Sydney Sweeney will portray. According to Variety, this decision is yet to be finalized.

"Split Fiction," which was only released in March, has already achieved significant success, selling over 2 million copies within its first week. Developed by Hazelight and designer Josef Fares, the game has also been selected as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2. IGN's review praised "Split Fiction," awarding it a 9/10 and describing it as "an expertly crafted co-op adventure that pinballs from one genre extreme to another, Split Fiction is a rollercoaster of constantly refreshed gameplay ideas and styles – and one that’s very hard to walk away from."

In addition to "Split Fiction," Hazelight's other blockbuster, "It Takes Two," which sold 23 million copies, is also slated for a movie adaptation. There is buzz that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson may take on a starring role in this film.

While there's always a chance these adaptations might not come to fruition, the current wave of successful video game movies suggests that Hollywood is eager to capitalize on this trend.

Last year, Story Kitchen announced several other projects, including film adaptations of Square Enix's "Just Cause" directed by Ángel Manuel Soto of "Blue Beetle" fame, as well as "Dredge: The Movie," "Kingmakers," "Sleeping Dogs," and even a live-action Toys 'R' Us movie.

Meanwhile, Hazelight continues to innovate, already teasing its next game project.
