"Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatible Only with GameCube Classics, Nintendo Confirms"

Nintendo enthusiasts have something exciting to look forward to: the Nintendo GameCube is set to make its debut on the Nintendo Switch Online service, coinciding with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside this, a classic GameCube controller will be introduced, although some fine print suggests it may be exclusively designed for GameCube games on the new console.

In the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer, a statement was spotted that reads: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies that the new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 is intended solely for use with GameCube titles available through the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, and may not be supported for other Switch 2 games. However, it's worth noting that past Nintendo controllers with similar restrictions have sometimes been adaptable for broader use. Interestingly, this disclaimer does not appear in the Nintendo of America version of the trailer.

Despite the controller's potential limitations, its design with a full array of buttons suggests it could handle many common gameplay inputs on the Switch 2. This might be a way for Nintendo to set expectations or prevent confusion among users who might try to use the GameCube controller for other purposes, such as a mouse substitute.

For those less interested in the new GameCube controller, there's good news: the existing GameCube Controller adapter, originally released for the Wii U, will be compatible with the Switch 2 via its USB port, providing continued utility for those who already own the accessory.

The Classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be available at the console's launch, though exact pre-order dates have not yet been disclosed. The pre-order process has been complicated by U.S. tariffs, adding some uncertainty to the rollout.

This major update to the Nintendo Switch Online library will offer subscribers access to a host of iconic 2000s-era titles. At launch this summer, fans can expect to dive into classics like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. Looking ahead, the library is set to grow, with teased additions such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more.
