Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link

Author : Max Jun 22,2025

Square Enix has officially cancelled *Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link*, the mobile spin-off of its beloved ARPG franchise. The game, which had already faced multiple delays—including setbacks to its Android closed beta—will no longer move forward as the company shifts its full attention to the development of *Kingdom Hearts IV*. This decision marks the end of a long-stalled project that aimed to expand the series in a fresh, location-based mobile format.

Originally set during an unexplored chapter in the *Kingdom Hearts* timeline, *Missing-Link* was designed to merge classic franchise elements with modern mobile gameplay mechanics. Players would have taken on the role of a keyblade wielder, battling waves of Heartless across various locations tied to the overarching narrative. A major highlight of the game’s design was its use of GPS and augmented reality features, allowing players to explore real-world locations through a fantasy lens. However, the exact implementation of this mechanic remained vague, and it's possible that these ambitious ideas proved too complex to fully realize within a mobile framework.

While the cancellation may come as a surprise to fans, Square Enix has a history of shelving mobile projects before launch. Despite the studio’s critical acclaim, many of its mobile titles struggle to gain traction outside of Japan. In the case of *Kingdom Hearts*, however, international appeal wasn’t expected to be an issue—making the cancellation more about internal development challenges than market concerns.

With *Missing-Link* now out of the picture, all eyes turn to *Kingdom Hearts IV*, the next major entry in the core series. For those eager to dive into immersive RPG experiences in the meantime, there’s no shortage of high-quality mobile RPGs available on iOS and Android. From epic fantasy adventures to dark, story-driven worlds, there’s plenty to keep fans engaged while they wait for the next big step in the *Kingdom Hearts* saga.
