1047 Games, the developers behind the hit multiplayer FPS Splitgate, are back with an exciting sequel set to launch in 2025. Dive into the details of what's in store with the Sol Splitgate League in Splitgate 2.
Splitgate 2 Launches in 2025
Familiar yet Fresh
On July 18, 1047 Games unveiled a cinematic announcement trailer for Splitgate 2, the eagerly awaited follow-up to the free-to-play shooter that captivated gamers worldwide upon its 2019 debut.CEO Ian Proulx shared that their primary objective is to "build a game that can last a decade or more." While the original game drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, the team recognized that "to create a modern game with longevity, we needed to develop the tools for a deep and engaging gameplay loop."
Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing at 1047 Games, emphasized their new approach to portals: "We rethought our approach to ensure that true Portal Gods could excel, but also that players don't need to constantly use portals to achieve victory."
Though the developers have kept specifics about Splitgate 2's gameplay under wraps, they confirmed that the game will be built using Unreal Engine 5, will be free-to-play, and will introduce a "faction system." While retaining some familiar elements, "Splitgate 2 aims to deliver a completely fresh experience compared to the original."
Splitgate 2 is scheduled for release in 2025 across PC, PS5|PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One platforms.
Known as "Halo meets Portal," Splitgate is an arena PvP first-person shooter where players can create wormholes to navigate the map swiftly. The original game's popularity surged after founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian released a demo, which garnered around 600,000 downloads in just one month. Its massive early success led to server capacity upgrades to accommodate the growing player base.
After years in early access, Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022. The studio then announced a shift in focus to "build the game fans deserve," teasing a new game in the Splitgate universe that would bring "revolutionary, not evolutionary, changes."
New Characters, Maps, Factions
The trailer introduced the Sol Splitgate League and unveiled three distinct factions that promise to enhance the gameplay experience.
According to the game’s Steam page, each faction offers a unique playstyle. Joining Aeros lets you "dash around the battlefield." Alternatively, you can "control the chaos as the tactical and time-manipulating Meridian." For those who prefer a more direct approach, "run in guns blazing with Sabrask’s raw power."
While the specifics on how these factions will influence gameplay remain undisclosed, it's confirmed that "Splitgate 2 is not a hero shooter" similar to Overwatch or Valorant.
Fans eager for gameplay footage will need to wait until Gamescom 2024, happening from August 21 to 25. However, the trailer itself has already stirred excitement among the community.
While most gameplay details are still confidential, the developers assured that the trailer accurately represents the experience in Splitgate 2. They confirmed, "yes, those are real maps. Yes, those are real Splitgate 2 weapons. Yes, that is a trail following you out of a portal. And yes, I’m telling you, in the house of Halo, that dual wielding was always awesome, so we brought it back."
Splitgate 2 Comics
Although Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign, fans can immerse themselves in the game's lore through a mobile companion app. This app allows users to read comics, collect character cards, and more. Additionally, you can take a quiz to discover which faction aligns best with your playstyle.
