Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Don't worry, the director of Deadpool & Wolverine is still actively involved in the project. We've received an exciting update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, who shared his enthusiasm with Screen Rant, stating, "I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
The details of this eagerly anticipated film remain largely under wraps, but we do know it will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed its place in the Star Wars timeline, saying, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions the film as the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
In the same interview with Deadline, Kennedy also revealed that the movie will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. She noted, "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that." Another significant detail is that Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star in the film.
Jonathan Tropper's optimistic words suggest that progress is being made on Levy's project. However, fans will need to exercise patience as the film is not expected to hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.
Disney has not released a Star Wars film since the polarizing Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. During this period, several projects were canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from the Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie initially slated for a late 2026 release was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has experienced several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping away after succeeding Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future Star Wars films, with a recent THR report indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming projects.
Disney's Star Wars slate extends beyond these films. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will write a new trilogy that is not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to grace screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch, promising fans a deep dive back into the Star Wars universe.
