In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Neil Druckmann, the showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head, along with fellow showrunner Craig Mazin, discussed the upcoming HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2. They revealed that actress Kaitlyn Dever, who plays Abby, won't need to bulk up for her role. Druckmann explained that the television version of the story prioritizes drama over the video game's mechanical distinctions, which necessitated Abby's muscular appearance in the game.

"We would've struggled to find someone as good as Kaitlyn to play this role," Druckmann stated. He highlighted that in the game, players control both Ellie and Abby, requiring distinct gameplay mechanics. Ellie is portrayed as smaller and more agile, while Abby, similar to Joel, is depicted as a brute who can physically dominate situations. However, in the HBO series, the focus shifts away from constant violent action, allowing for a different portrayal of Abby.

Craig Mazin added that this change presents an opportunity to explore Abby as a character who might be physically more vulnerable but possesses a stronger spirit. He teased that the series would delve into the origins and manifestations of Abby's formidable nature, hinting at a deeper character exploration over multiple seasons. HBO plans to extend The Last of Us Part 2 beyond a single season, with Season 2 featuring a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes.

The character of Abby has been a focal point of controversy, with some fans expressing their discontent by harassing Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and actress Laura Bailey, who voiced Abby in the game. This harassment extended to threats against Bailey's family. HBO took extra precautions during the filming of Season 2, providing additional security for Kaitlyn Dever due to potential backlash.

Isabel Merced, who plays Dina in Season 2, commented on the unusual level of hatred directed at Abby, reminding fans that Abby is a fictional character. This sentiment underscores the intense reactions surrounding the adaptation and its characters.
