Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is branching out with a new free-to-play spin-off titled Hinuka Junreitan, coming soon to mobile devices and PC. TOHO Games, Edelweiss, and G2 Studios have officially unveiled the project for Android, iOS, and Steam.
Initially teased in November 2024, the game now has a dedicated website and an official X account. Fans can expect more frequent updates and announcements from the developers moving forward, with a release date likely to be revealed in the near future.
Sakuna's signature blend of rice farming and action is coming to mobile
The original Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin launched in 2020 on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. It masterfully combined side-scrolling combat with intricate rice cultivation, creating a unique hybrid of farming simulation and action RPG.
The game's compelling folklore, combat, and agricultural mechanics were a major success, leading to an anime adaptation, manga series, and another spin-off titled Sakuna Chronicles: Kokorowa and the Gears of Creation. That separate project remains in development by Edelweiss and Marvelous.
Hinuka Junreitan is being built with mobile in mind, featuring a structure that includes item-based microtransactions and live-service components. Narratively, it will adapt the Sakuna universe into a more expansive and continuously evolving format.
For context, the original story follows Sakuna, a harvest goddess cast out from the celestial realm. Her journey involved meticulously tending a rice paddy while using a magical scarf to battle foes and navigate the environment.
