Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project, leading to the layoff of an unspecified number of employees involved in the project. This news initially surfaced through a now-deleted LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator, who mentioned being part of the project for the past year and now seeking new opportunities in the gaming industry.
IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) project. The project was a spin-off developed by a team that previously worked on a canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, sources have described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual connected to the project has stated on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.
This development is part of a broader pattern of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring at Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. That year saw EA eliminate 50 jobs at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. Nearly a year later, the company laid off 670 employees across various divisions and canceled multiple projects, including the Star Wars FPS. This wave of cuts also affected around two dozen Respawn employees. Following these layoffs, BioWare underwent further restructuring, with developers reassigned to other projects and additional key staff members let go.
IGN has sought comment from Electronic Arts regarding these recent developments.
