Red Dead Redemption 2 Rumored for Nintendo Switch 2 by 2025 End, With Next-Gen Upgrade

Author : Thomas May 28,2025

Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 might hit the shelves by the end of 2025. Additionally, there's talk about a next-gen upgrade for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. According to GameReactor, sources close to Rockstar suggest that not only is a Switch 2 version of the beloved Wild West adventure in the works, but a "next-gen upgrade patch" is also on the horizon, promising enhancements for current-gen consoles as well.

While details remain sparse, GameReactor's sources claim that both the port and the upgrade could be available as soon as later this year. This echoes reports from Nintenduo, which states that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is slated for release within Take-Two's current financial year, ending March 31, 2026. It's still up in the air whether the game will be available digitally only or if there will be a physical edition as well.

When Red Dead Redemption 2 first launched in 2018, we hailed it as a "masterpiece" and awarded it a perfect 10/10 score. IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review praised it, saying: "Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game of rare quality; a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."

The possibility of Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to the Switch 2 may not be too surprising. In a recent Q&A session with investors following Take-Two's latest financial results, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform. He noted that Nintendo has been more supportive of third-party publishers this time around compared to past efforts.

"We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform," Zelnick said. "Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."

Take-Two is set to bring Civilization 7 to the Switch 2 on its launch day, June 5, along with the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (specific games and release dates are yet to be announced), and Borderlands 4 on September 12. While these titles are not unexpected, given Take-Two's history with the Nintendo Switch, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door might be open for additional releases from their back catalog. While GTA 6 might not make the cut, there's potential for titles like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 to find their way onto the new console.
