PlayStation Favorites Now on Switch!

Author : Caleb Jan 07,2025

This is it, folks! My final retro game eShop list, primarily because I'm running low on retro consoles with diverse game libraries. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, amassing a legendary game library that continues to see re-releases. While these titles may have challenged Nintendo's dominance years ago, today everyone can enjoy them on their preferred platforms. Here are ten of our favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa is a fantastic game that deserved more recognition than it received, though it certainly wasn't ignored. It's arguably one of the most successful 2.5D platformers on the system. Play as a charming floppy-eared creature navigating the dream world to thwart a dangerous threat. Enjoy vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the sequel (originally on PlayStation 2) is slightly less impressive, the set is a must-have.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A true classic! This Japanese RPG revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's biggest success and propelling the PlayStation to the top. Yes, a Final Fantasy VII remake exists, but the original remains a worthwhile experience. Embrace the polygonal charm and rediscover why this game captivated millions.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revived a dormant franchise. While later entries became more eccentric, the original stands out as a thrilling, action-packed adventure. It's undeniably fun, and if you enjoy it, the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

Let's explore a slightly more niche title. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series to 3D. The polygonal graphics may show their age, but the game's charm endures. Vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanics, and inventive bosses make this a standout shooter.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

While I could fill this list with Square Enix games, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII to give others a chance. Chrono Cross, tasked with following one of the most beloved JRPGs ever, didn't quite reach the same heights. However, viewed independently, it's a clever, visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit sometimes underdeveloped, cast. Plus, it boasts one of the best video game soundtracks ever created.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I enjoy most Mega Man games, my opinion is undoubtedly biased by nostalgia. For non-fans, I recommend only a few from each series. In the Mega Man X series, X4 stands out for its superior design compared to its siblings. It's a brief moment of balance before the series strayed again. Grab the Legacy Collection and decide for yourself!

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Sony published many games it didn't own. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with satisfying action. Remember, its creator also made Ghosts ‘n Goblins. While initially easy, the game's difficulty increases, making it a rewarding experience.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port formed the basis of this HD release. Grandia, created by many Lunar developers, shares its spirit. In an era of Evangelion-influenced RPGs, Grandia stood out with its bright, cheerful adventure and satisfying combat system. The collection's second game is also excellent.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft is a PlayStation icon, with five adventures on the console. While quality varied, the original is arguably the best, focusing on tomb raiding rather than action. This remastered collection lets you decide.

moon ($18.99)

Let's end with a hidden gem. Initially Japan-only, moon deconstructs the typical RPG, functioning more as an adventure game with a "punk" aesthetic. While not consistently fun, its unique message and English release are noteworthy.

That's the list! What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments! Thanks for reading!
