Generally, PC gaming is synonymous with keyboard and mouse control, and for good reason. Precision-demanding genres like first-person shooters and strategy games thrive on this input method. Adapting to anything else in these genres can be challenging. Indeed, grand strategy and real-time strategy games spent years ignoring consoles due to perceived gamepad control limitations. While these genres now frequently appear on PlayStation and Xbox, their PC versions often remain superior.
Although most PC releases strive for robust keyboard and mouse support, some games are arguably better suited to controllers. Fast-paced action games, especially those focused on reflex-based movement or melee combat, often benefit from a gamepad's intuitive controls. Similarly, many genres, particularly those originating on consoles before transitioning to PC, are naturally associated with controller use. So, what PC games excel with a gamepad?
Updated January 7, 2025 by Mark Sammut: Late 2024 saw several notable releases, including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force. Most of these games are arguably better with keyboard and mouse. However, Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered might offer a slightly improved experience with a gamepad, though the difference is not substantial.
Several upcoming PC game releases (within the next month) show promise for controller support:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita revival echoing the Monster Hunter formula, making controller use logical.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently benefits from gamepad control, and this remaster is expected to follow suit.
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: The original remake played better with a controller on PC, and Rebirth's combat system is very similar.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Another PS5 exclusive coming to PC, typically suggesting a controller-centric design. However, keyboard and mouse should still function adequately.
A 2024 Soulslike game has also been added to this list. See the link below for details.
