Following its Xbox and PC releases, Palworld finally arrived on PlayStation consoles, as revealed during September 2024's PlayStation State of Play. However, a significant exception exists: the PS5 launch has been indefinitely delayed in Japan.
Palworld's PlayStation 5 Debut in Japan: An Unexpected Delay
Palworld's PlayStation State of Play Reveal
The PS5 version of Palworld launched globally as announced at the PlayStation State of Play event in September 2024. Sony even showcased a trailer featuring Palworld characters equipped with Horizon Forbidden West-inspired gear.
Despite the worldwide release, Japanese PlayStation gamers are currently unable to access the game. This delay is strongly linked to ongoing legal action between Nintendo/Pokémon and Pocketpair, Palworld's developer. A patent infringement lawsuit filed by Nintendo and Pokémon is the suspected cause for the postponement.
Palworld's PS5 Japan Release: Uncertain Future
Palworld's Japanese (X) Twitter account addressed the situation, confirming the global release in 68 countries and regions but apologizing for the Japanese delay, stating that a release date for Japan remains undetermined. They pledged to work towards a future release for all PS5 users in Japan.
While Pocketpair hasn't explicitly stated the reason for the delay, the ongoing legal battle in Japan is widely considered the primary factor. Nintendo's lawsuit, filed in Tokyo Court, seeks an injunction and damages. A successful injunction could force Pocketpair to cease Palworld operations entirely, potentially resulting in the game's removal from all platforms.
