Nintendo Console Rankings: A Comprehensive Tier List

Author : Connor Apr 11,2025

With the highly anticipated reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has officially confirmed the arrival of its latest console. Boasting over 40 years of innovation in video game hardware, the excitement for what Nintendo has in store is palpable, even if initial impressions suggest a more cautious approach this time around. For those eagerly awaiting this next-generation console, we've analyzed every detail from the Switch 2 trailer. But before diving into the future, let's take a nostalgic journey through Nintendo's storied past.

Over the past five decades, Nintendo has released eight home consoles (NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and the Switch) and five handhelds (Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, DS, and 3DS). But which stands out as the best? I've ranked them using an IGN Tier List, considering both the hardware innovation and the enduring quality and legacy of each console's game library. Here's my personal tier list:

The NES holds a special place in my heart as the first console I ever played. Memories of tackling the original Super Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, and the challenging Hook platformer as a five-year-old make it impossible for me not to rank it in the S tier. Similarly, the Switch's innovative hybrid design, despite issues like stick drift, along with stellar titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Odyssey, secures its spot at the top alongside the NES.

Do you disagree with my rankings? Perhaps you believe the Virtual Boy outshines the N64? Feel free to create your own tier list and compare your S, A, B, C, and D tiers with the IGN community.
