Nicolas Cage delivered a powerful condemnation of artificial intelligence during his Saturn Awards acceptance speech, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards a creative "dead end." Cage, who won Best Actor for his role in Dream Scenario, argued that AI lacks the capacity to authentically portray the human condition.
As reported by Variety, Cage's speech emphasized the irreplaceable role of human emotion and thought in artistic creation. He stated that allowing AI to manipulate even a minor aspect of an actor's performance would ultimately compromise the integrity and truthfulness of art, replacing it with mere financial gain. He passionately pleaded with fellow artists to resist this encroachment, highlighting the unique ability of human actors to reflect the complexities of the human experience—a capability, he stressed, that AI simply cannot replicate. He warned that unchecked AI integration would lead to art devoid of heart, lacking edge and ultimately becoming bland and uninspired.
The filmmaking community is similarly divided on the issue. While Tim Burton expressed deep unease regarding AI-generated art, Zack Snyder advocated for its embrace, urging filmmakers to actively engage with the technology rather than remaining passive observers.
