MultiVersus to End Service After Season 5 in May

Player First Games has announced that MultiVersus Season 5 will mark the end of the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, concluding on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. The studio shared this news through a blog post on their official website, confirming that MultiVersus, which debuted on May 28 of the previous year, will kick off its final season on February 4, extending through to the end date in May 2025. At this point, online play will cease, but Player First Games assures that players can continue to enjoy all their earned and purchased content offline through local and training modes.

“Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus,” a heartfelt message from the MultiVersus team states. “All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

Player First Games also announced that real-money transactions for MultiVersus are no longer available as of today, though players can still use Gleamium and character tokens to access in-game content until the final support date on May 30. At that time, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

The decision to end MultiVersus comes after Warner Bros. Discovery labeled the project as a significant disappointment. In a financial call in November, the company disclosed that MultiVersus fell short of expectations, leading to a $100 million writedown in its games sector. This added to a total of $300 million in losses following the launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January. Additionally, Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad is set to leave the company after a challenging 2024, as reported by Variety last week.

“We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline,” stated chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels during the November call.

Despite the game shutting down just days after its one-year anniversary, Season 5 promises to go out with a flourish. Alongside the typical new content that seasonal updates bring, new characters Lola Bunny and Aquaman will join the roster. Lola Bunny, the Looney Toons icon, will be unlockable as a daily calendar reward, while the DC superhero Aquaman will be available through the battle pass, both starting next week.
