Microsoft has announced workforce reductions affecting approximately 3% of its global employees.

According to CNBC, Microsoft employed 228,000 workers as of June 2024 and aims to streamline management structures across divisions. The layoffs impact roughly 6,000 employees.

A Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC: "We're making ongoing organizational adjustments to ensure Microsoft remains competitive in a constantly evolving market."

IGN has reached out to Microsoft for clarification on whether these cuts will affect its video game division.

In September 2024, Microsoft eliminated an additional 650 gaming positions, following 1,900 layoffs earlier that year. These cuts included the shutdown of Tango Gameworks (developer of Hi-Fi Rush) and Arkane Austin (Redfall studio). Since acquiring Activision Blizzard for $69 billion in 2023, Microsoft has reduced its gaming workforce by 2,550 employees.

In a June 2024 interview with IGN, Xbox head Phil Spencer stated: "Running a sustainable, growing business requires difficult choices—sometimes decisions I don't personally favor, but that must be made."
