Hollywood Mourns a Legendary Actor
According to NBC reports, Madsen was discovered at his Malibu residence on Thursday morning, as confirmed by his manager Ron Smith.
In an official statement, representatives Susan Ferris, Ron Smith, and publicist Liz Rodriguez reflected: "Throughout the past two years, Michael Madsen had been creating remarkable work in independent cinema with upcoming projects including Resurrection Road, Concessions, and Cookbook for Southern Housewives. He was enthusiastically anticipating this new creative phase of his career."
The statement continued: "Michael was also editing his forthcoming poetry collection Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems. As one of Hollywood's most distinctive talents, his passing leaves an immense void in the film community."
A Celebrated Career Spanning Decades
Madsen gained international recognition through his collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino, notably portraying the unhinged Mr. Blonde in 1992's Reservoir Dogs and the lethal Budd in the Kill Bill saga. His later work with Tarantino included 2015's The Hateful Eight and 2019's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
While achieving critical success with these films, Madsen also appeared in commercial projects like 1995's Species, and later expressed regret about the poorly-received BloodRayne, describing it as "an abomination."
Versatility Across Film and Gaming
The Chicago-born actor's breakthrough came in 1983's WarGames, followed by memorable performances in Thelma & Louise, Free Willy, Donnie Brasco, and Die Another Day.
Madsen also lent his distinctive voice to iconic video game characters including Toni Cipriani in Grand Theft Auto III, William Carver in The Walking Dead game series, and Daud in the Dishonored franchise. His final acting credit was 2023's Crime Boss: Rockay City.
