God of War TV Series: A Creative Reset
The Show is Not Cancelled
Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have exited the God of War adaptation. Despite already completed scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a new creative vision.
Key figures remaining on board include executive producer Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director), along with PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Vertigo's Roy Lee, and Santa Monica Studio's Yumi Yang. Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to reshape the series' direction. Importantly, the project remains uncancelled.
Future Plans Despite Setbacks
The Amazon and Sony partnership for the God of War adaptation was first announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, capitalizing on the success of the 2018 game reboot. This initiative reflects Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises for film and television, a strategy that led to the formation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. This also includes the Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, amongst other projects.
Successful adaptations already released include Uncharted (2022), The Last of Us (2023 – with a second season slated for 2025), the Gran Turismo film (2023), and the Twisted Metal TV series (2024). Further projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film (set for release on April 25, 2025).
