Tidepool Games has just released a thrilling, fast-paced pixel art 'snakelike' roguelike on Android called MageTrain. If you're familiar with Nimble Quest, you'll find MageTrain's gameplay reminiscent of it, as it draws significant inspiration from the classic.
What's MageTrain Like?
MageTrain cleverly blends elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into an exciting gaming experience. You lead a line of heroes that follow you like a snake, automatically attacking as you navigate the arena. Your strategic challenge is to manage the positioning of your heroes within the line, as their abilities vary based on their placement—whether they're leading the charge or supporting from the rear.
At launch, MageTrain offers nine unique heroes, including one who can throw birds! Each hero comes equipped with distinct skills that adapt according to their position in the train. Your journey will take you through eight distinct dungeons, where you'll encounter 28 different enemy types and unlock 30 skills to enhance your team. Along the way, you'll gather gold and power-ups to strengthen your heroes.
The roguelike structure ensures that no two runs are the same. You'll navigate branching paths, make critical upgrade choices, and strive to survive as long as you can. This dynamic gameplay is akin to what you'd find in Slay the Spire or FTL, with no fixed levels and no option to save your progress mid-run. Every mistake, whether it's crashing into an obstacle or being overrun by enemies, means starting over from scratch.
It Isn't Slow-Paced
The excitement of MageTrain lies in the continuous improvement you experience with each run, even when you don't make it to the end. You'll learn when to play defensively, when to launch a full offensive, and when to simply hold on for another 30 seconds.
