Project KV Cancelled After Negative Reactions Over Blue Archive Similarities

Project KV, a visual novel developed by former Blue Archive creators, has been canceled following significant backlash over its striking similarities to its predecessor. This article explores the reasons behind the game's abrupt cancellation.

Project KV Cancellation: Dynamis One's Apology

Dynamis One, the studio founded by ex-Blue Archive developers, announced the cancellation of Project KV on September 9th via Twitter (X). Their statement acknowledged the controversy surrounding the game's resemblance to Blue Archive, apologized for the resulting disruption, and confirmed the removal of all related online materials. The studio expressed regret to fans and pledged to improve future projects to better meet expectations.

The initial promotional video, released August 18th, generated excitement. A second teaser, two weeks later, provided further details on characters and storyline. However, the project's cancellation followed just a week after the second teaser's release. While disappointing for Dynamis One, the online response to the cancellation was largely positive.

Blue Archive vs. "Red Archive": A Storm of Controversy

Dynamis One, led by former Blue Archive lead Park Byeong-Lim, sparked controversy upon its founding in April. The subsequent unveiling of Project KV ignited a firestorm of criticism. Fans quickly identified numerous similarities to Blue Archive, from art style and music to the core concept: a city populated by weapon-wielding female students, and a "Master" character echoing Blue Archive's "Sensei."

The most contentious point was the presence of halo-like adornments above characters' heads, mirroring a key visual element in Blue Archive with significant narrative importance. This led to accusations of plagiarism and the nickname "Red Archive," suggesting a derivative work.

While Blue Archive's general producer, Kim Yong-ha, indirectly addressed the controversy by sharing a clarifying fan post emphasizing Project KV's lack of official connection to Blue Archive, the damage was done.

The Overwhelming Negative Feedback

The intense negative reaction ultimately led to Project KV's cancellation. Dynamis One's announcement lacked specifics regarding the decision-making process. While some expressed disappointment over the lost potential, many viewed the cancellation as a justified response to the perceived plagiarism. The future direction of Dynamis One and whether they will learn from this experience remains to be seen.
