Rome is now home to Italy's largest game museum, the Game Museum GAMM, which has opened its doors to the public. Situated in the iconic Piazza della Repubblica, this innovative museum was conceptualized by Marco Accordi Rickards, a multifaceted figure known as a writer, journalist, professor, and the CEO of Vigamus.
Marco Rickards is deeply committed to preserving and celebrating the rich culture of video games. He describes GAMM as an immersive journey that intertwines history, technology, and gameplay exploration. The Game Museum GAMM builds upon the legacy of Vigamus, another gaming museum in Rome that has welcomed over two million visitors since its inception in 2012.
Spread across 700 square meters and two levels, the Game Museum GAMM is thoughtfully divided into three captivating thematic areas. Before diving into the specifics, take a moment to visualize the museum through this glimpse!
Here’s What You’ll See in GAMM, the Game Museum
First up is the GAMMDOME, a digital playground that offers interactive stations alongside authentic artifacts from gaming history, such as consoles and other memorabilia. It operates on the 4 E Concept: Experience, Exhibition, Education, and Entertainment, making it a multifaceted experience for all visitors.
Next, the Path of Arcadia, or PARC, transports you back to the golden era of coin-operated games. This section celebrates the classics from the late '70s through the '80s, with a touch of early '90s nostalgia, offering a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
Finally, the Historical Playground, or HIP, focuses on the anatomy of gameplay. Here, you can explore the structure of games, their interaction mechanics, and design principles. It's like getting a backstage pass to the evolution of gaming.
The museum is open from Monday to Thursday between 9:30 AM and 7:30 PM, and on Fridays and Saturdays, it extends its hours until 11:30 PM. Admission is priced at 15 euros, and for more information, you can visit the official website of GAMM, the Game Museum.
