CES 2025 unveiled unexpected entertainment news from Sony, confirming PlayStation's hit shooter Helldivers 2 is getting a Hollywood adaptation.
The live-action project brings together Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. While details remain scarce, PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash revealed during CES: "We're thrilled to partner with Sony Pictures in bringing Helldivers 2's explosive galactic warfare to the big screen."
Developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, Helldivers 2 draws clear inspiration from Starship Troopers' satirical militarism. Players battle mechanized Automatons and swarming Terminids while Super Earth's propaganda machine glorifies their "Managed Democracy" campaigns.
The announcement left fans craving specifics neither Sony nor Arrowhead could yet provide. When questioned about developmental involvement on social media, Arrowhead's Johan Pilestedt acknowledged avoiding definitive answers while confirming limited creative participation.
"I've carefully sidestepped this," Pilestedt admitted. "While we'll contribute, filmmaking isn't our expertise. It's wise we don't hold creative veto powers over Hollywood professionals."
Given Starship Troopers' cinematic legacy, Helldivers 2 presents unconventional adaptation material. With early development confirmed, casting and creative decisions likely remain months away.
The co-op shooter shattered PlayStation records with 12 million sales in three months, experiencing renewed popularity following its Illuminate faction update.
Sony's CES showcase also confirmed adaptations of Horizon Zero Dawn and Ghost of Tsushima (as an anime series), continuing PlayStation's multimedia expansion alongside HBO's upcoming The Last of Us Season 2.
