Exciting news for fans of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam: a live-action film adaptation is finally moving forward into full production. Bandai Namco and Legendary have recently signed an agreement to co-finance this long-awaited project, bringing it to life on the big screen.
Originally announced back in 2018, the film had been relatively quiet until now. However, with the latest updates from Legendary and the newly established Bandai Namco Filmworks America, enthusiasts can start anticipating the first-ever live-action Gundam movie. The film, currently without an official title, will be penned and directed by Kim Mickle, known for her work on Sweet Tooth, and is slated for a global theatrical release.
This marks a significant milestone for the franchise, which boasts an impressive portfolio including 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and a highly successful toy line. Together, these elements generate over $900 million annually.
While specific release dates and plot details remain under wraps, both companies have promised to share more information as it becomes available. A teaser poster has already been released to build anticipation among fans.
"Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979, established the genre of 'real robot anime' that could not be described in terms of simple good and evil, which had been the trend of robot anime up to that point, with realistic depictions of war, detailed scientific examinations, and intricately interwoven human dramas that treated robots as 'weapons' called 'mobile suits,' and caused a huge boom," they stated. This rich narrative history adds even more excitement to the upcoming live-action adaptation.
