In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, the beasts you'll come across are not only ferocious but also uniquely memorable. Among them, Rompopolo stands out as a truly distinctive Brute Wyvern. If you're looking to master the art of defeating and capturing this monster, here's a comprehensive guide to help you along the way.

You'll first encounter Rompopolo in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. This unique Brute Wyvern makes its debut appearance in the Oilwell Basin region as you journey toward Azuz City. Defeating it is crucial to progress in the game.

Once you've triumphed over Rompopolo at least once, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then engage in repeated battles with it by either exploring the Oilwell Basin or by initiating the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.

To prepare effectively for this battle, arm your hunter with water-element weapons, which you can obtain from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, equip gear with fire resistance, which you can farm from Uth Duna or Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I or a general Defense Charm I to bolster your defenses. Before the fight, don't forget to grill a meal to enhance your health and stamina.

Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo's unique wyvern nature comes with an equally unique set of attacks. Its bipedal form, featuring saggy skin that inflates with gas, serves as ammunition for gas-based attacks that can cause explosions. Be aware that Rompopolo can also inflict poison status ailments, so keep Antidotes handy. Your Palico can assist in cleansing most ailments, though it's not always reliable.

Key attacks to be cautious of include:

  • Arm Swipe – Rompopolo uses its clawed arms to swipe forward twice. This attack is easily dodged due to its limited range.
  • Lunge With Arm Swipe – Rompopolo charges forward while raising both arms to perform an arcing swipe.
  • Tail Swing – Rompopolo swings its tail toward its target.
  • Poison Stream or Swipe – It sprays a stream of poison gas or charges while swinging its head, dispersing poison.
  • Oil Explosion – From a distance, Rompopolo uses its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing eruptions. Dodge these carefully.
  • Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, Rompopolo pumps more gas into the oil for a larger explosion. Dodge to avoid significant damage.

Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

As with previous *Monster Hunter* titles, you have the option to either capture or kill Rompopolo near the battle's end. To capture, weaken the monster until your Palico indicates it's "tired" (nearly dead), then use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it. Once trapped, deploy at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out, completing the capture.

Both capturing and killing the monster yield viable rewards, with slight differences in item drops. While specific differences are yet to be confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank drops from Rompopolo:
