Sony and game developer Santa Monica Studio have unveiled the Dark Odyssey collection, an exciting new update for God of War Ragnarök that's set to launch next week. This update brings a host of in-game equipment with a striking black-and-gold aesthetic, inspired by one of the franchise's most iconic outfits.

In a detailed PlayStation.Blog post, Sony outlined its comprehensive plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the God of War series. The Dark Odyssey update is a centerpiece of these celebrations, offering a free update to all God of War Ragnarök players on PlayStation 5 and PC, available starting March 20.

The update introduces a sleek, black-and-gold theme across various in-game items. Kratos, Atreus, and Freya will each receive their own unique cosmetic sets, along with a variety of shields and weapons that will sport this new look. The highlight of the Dark Odyssey collection is undoubtedly the armor set and appearance for Kratos, reminiscent of a legendary skin from God of War 2 that was previously exclusive to players who conquered the game on God Mode difficulty.

Players can access these new items by opening any Lost Items chest in the base game or directly in the roguelike Valhalla mode once the update is live. Additionally, the update will allow players to customize Kratos’ weapons' appearance without affecting their abilities, adding a new layer of personalization to the gameplay experience.

God of War Ragnarök was released in late 2022, and while this update is a significant part of the series' 20th anniversary celebration, Sony has planned a range of other activities and offers. These include downloadable social media assets, an art showcase in collaboration with Los Angeles’ Gallery Nucleus, new merchandise, sales, and multiple vinyl releases that trace the franchise's rich history.

Santa Monica Studio expressed their gratitude to the fans, stating, “On behalf of everyone at Santa Monica Studio, we are immeasurably grateful to have had the chance to build the legacy of this series with and for you, the fans of God of War.”

For more ways to celebrate 20 years of God of War, fans can look forward to an upcoming PlayStation symphony world tour starting next month. Additionally, insights into the creative direction for the next installment in the series are available for those interested in the future of Kratos' journey.
