The trailer showed detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down onto flat connectors, then sliding across surfaces like traditional computer mice. Close observation reveals what looks like tracking sensors on the connector bases, fueling speculation about this potential functionality.

This feature immediately sparked discussions about potential applications for strategy games like Firaxis' upcoming Civilization 7. While the game is confirmed for the original Switch and will likely be backward-compatible, fans wonder if a dedicated Switch 2 version might utilize this rumored control scheme.
When IGN asked Civilization 7 developers Ed Beach and Dennis Shirk about the potential mouse-like functionality, Shirk offered an intriguing response: "It's definitely intriguing... I love what they're doing with the controllers. That's about all I can say - it would be cool for something like that."
While Firaxis hasn't confirmed a Switch 2 version (that announcement would come from publisher 2K Games), Nintendo's upcoming April Direct may provide answers. Beyond this mystery, we know the Switch 2 launches in 2025 with a new Mario Kart title underway.
