Evil Dead: The Game, the asymmetric multiplayer title based on the iconic horror franchise, has been pulled from digital storefronts by its publisher, marking the end of its availability for purchase. Launched in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the game received an 8/10 from IGN, praised for its thrilling cat-and-mouse gameplay, despite some rough edges reminiscent of the horror/comedy films that inspired it. A Game of the Year Edition released a year later did not manage to boost player numbers significantly, leading to the cancellation of the Nintendo Switch version and the cessation of new content development in September 2023.
Now, three years after its launch, Evil Dead: The Game can no longer be bought, but its servers will remain operational, allowing existing owners to continue playing. In a statement on the game's Steam page, developer and publisher Saber Interactive confirmed the delisting:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision has been met with disappointment from the community, reflected in numerous negative reviews on the game's Steam page, with many players feeling that the game is now effectively dead. Despite this, the game retains a 'mixed' Steam user review rating. One player, with over 380 hours in-game, left a positive review stating, "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, known for last year's hit Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, continues to expand its portfolio with several licensed movie games in development, including John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, and an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game. Additionally, Turok: Origins and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 are on their roadmap.
