Elder Scrolls Online Subclasses Come After 11 Long Years of Fans Requesting It

The Elder Scrolls Online has finally introduced a much-anticipated feature that fans have been eagerly waiting for: subclasses. This new addition will revolutionize the gameplay experience and enhance player customization. Dive in to discover how this feature works and what's on the horizon for the game.

Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines

As The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) marks its 10th Anniversary, Zenimax Online Studios has unveiled an array of exciting updates during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10. One of the standout announcements was the introduction of subclassing, a feature long requested by the community.

For years, players have expressed frustration over the need to start from scratch with each new skill tree addition in this expansive MMO. The developers have listened and are now implementing subclasses, allowing players to mix and match skill lines without the need to create new characters.

To access this feature, players must reach level 50. Once there, they can retain one skill line from their base class and swap out two others with any of the six available classes. This flexibility opens up over 3000 unique combinations, enabling players to tailor their gameplay to their preferred style.

ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in this new system, noting that despite the potential increase in Power Levels, the team is satisfied with the balance they've achieved.

Seasons of the Worm Cult

ZeniMax Online is also transitioning to a seasonal content model, which Studio Director Matt Firor believes will allow for more innovative approaches to storytelling and gameplay. He stated, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems, and that's exactly what we're going to do, but we'll do this in a different cadence, one that allows us, the developers, to broaden our focus and increase variety."

The next chapter, "Seasons of the Worm Cult," marks a significant milestone as a 10-year follow-up to the original Molag Bal storyline. Players will explore the Isle of Solstice, a new zone where they'll tackle the resurgence of the Worm Cult.

Producer Susan Kath clarified that while the "Seasons of the Worm Cult" will span most of the year, future seasons will be shorter, lasting about 3 to 6 months. The developers also plan to introduce "remix" seasons, revisiting past narratives, with a Dark Brotherhood-themed season on the horizon.

2025 Content Pass and Premium Edition

On April 11, ESO announced via Twitter (X) the launch of a new content pass and premium edition, encompassing both past and upcoming releases. Here's what each version includes:

The Premium Edition also grants access to all previously released Chapters and Classes, from Morrowind to Gold Road, and includes the base-game Classes along with the Warden, Necromancer, and Arcanist.

As ESO celebrates its 10th anniversary, the game continues to expand its rich history and engage its supportive community. By revisiting past storylines, the developers aim to complete unfinished narratives and deepen the game's lore. The Elder Scrolls Online is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
